Volunteer Accommodation |
 |
This information is being prepared for those Visiting Volunteers who will be
utilising the accommodation provided at Milparinka. The stone
cottage includes a kitchen/living area (very compact is a description that comes
to mind).
The kitchen consists of sink-cupboards,
and electrical goods such as a banquet frying pan, microwave, vegetable steamer,
toaster etc and a small stove. All crockery, cutlery and glasses will be provided.
We will also maintain a small larder of
basic essentials, such as sugar, flour, tea and coffee and milk etc, plus tea
towels and cleaning essentials. The refrigerator and freezer are in the barracks just a few yards away together with an automatic washing machine and sink.
The living/dining area of the cottage has a small dining table and chairs, two
comfortable chairs, and a
television.
The bedroom has two single beds and a tall boy cupboard. We will provide
mattress and pillow covers, a pillow for each bed, bed cover, two cotton weave
blankets, and hot water bottles.
An oil filled heater is also be supplied, and an airconditioner is being
considered in the event that the cottage will be used over summer. The
thick stone walls, however, do provide excellent insulation.
The bathroom has a simple shower, handbasin and toilet. It is shared with other
Volunteers who may be onsite, but staying in their own accommodation. A north-easterly facing verandah
provides a warm, protected spot for reading, resting or just plain sitting in
the sun.
What will you need to bring?
Visiting Volunteers will need to bring their own sheets, (single bed) pillow
cases and towels. We tried to
avoid this situation, but the logistics of always leaving everything clean for
the next group is too hard.
Volunteers will also need to provide all their main food items, especially
perishables such as meat,
vegetables and bread. These can be obtained from Broken Hill on the way through
the city, but we will
open an volunteer’s account with a grocery store in Broken Hill. Replacement
items can be sent with themail service each Tuesday and Thursday. There is also
a small supermarket in Tibooburra.
Communications:
We do have a telephone and fax. The number is 08 80913862.
Health care:
The RFDS visits Tibooburra for a regular clinic every Tuesday, but can be
contacted at any time. There is aRFDS Medical Chest at the hotel which carries a
range of medications. A first aid kit is available in thebarracks.
Alternate accommodation:
There are one or two occasions where there will be an overlap of Visiting
Volunteers. In this situation we do have a couple of options.
1. We can provide an extra bed, located in the barracks. This is a short term
option that will, with a bit
of good grace, work satisfactorily. When it is necessary to use this
accommodation we will let the
Volunteer know well in advance so that arrangements are known ahead of time.
2. The Albert Hotel will offer discounted accommodation at $20 per night should
we need to use it.
3. Some Volunteers travel with their own caravan/camper. We provide power and
water for these
people to access, close to the Heritage Precinct.
Additional options:
Accommodation is also available at the Shearer's Quarters at
Theldarpa for anyone taking part in the Visiting
Volunteer or Artist in Residence Program
