Rumours of gold in the Corner Country had been circulating for
some time when, in 1858, the Legislative Council of South Australia funded a
venture into the region to look for evidence of the precious metal.
Nothing was found.
Twenty years later, payable gold was discovered near
Depot Glen. Within a year 14 ounces had been found some miles southwest,
at Mt Browne. Great excitement about the new "El Dorado" must
have abounded, and at least six teams of diggers left Wilcannia for the gold
fields.
The conditions must have been abysmal. There was a
terrible shortage of food and water, which worsened as the population grew.
Prices for basic commodities such as flour, were exorbitant. Diseases, such as
cholera and typhoid, were rife on the fields.
Campsites were established along the Evelyn Creek, leading to
the proclamation of Milparinka as the first township in the region. Later
three other townships, Mt Browne, Albert and Tibooburra would also be
proclaimed.
Today, the pioneer diggings of Mt Browne and the local
cemetery, bear witness to this chapter in the history of the Corner
Country.
Located just a short drive to the south west of Milparinka, visitors
