back to network index
Fowlers Gap is the University of
New South Wales' 39,000 hectare arid zone research station, located
adjacent to the Silver City Highway 76 km north of Broken
The
Station’s mission is to create knowledge about the
function of arid zone landscapes and plant life in a
pastoral
context. This mission is pursued with
research,
teaching,
interpretation and public education through eco-tourism.
The
landscape consists of low shrubland communities dominated by saltbush,
bluebush and
copperburrs
with scattered mulga and
belah,
and river red gums along the ephemeral creeks on lowlands in the west,
the
Barrier
Ranges running north-south, and plains in the east.
Wildlife
is abundant and includes many reptiles, around a hundred bird
species
and four species of large kangaroos.
The
Station has constructed
eco-trails
and wildlife–viewing platforms to interpret this landscape and its
flora
and
fauna, and to
provide
an outstanding learning experience to visitors
.
Accommodation
ranges from self-contained cottages, catered quarters or a large
communal dormitory.
Guided
tours are available.
