In Sturt's Steps
follows a route that approximates that taken by Captain Charles Sturt
during his 1844-45 inland
expedition.
Leaving
Broken Hill the journey the route can be via Silverton and the road
which continues along the western side of the Barrier Range, or it can
begin at the old Yanco Glen turn-off on the Silver City Highway and lead
over the ranges past Mt Gipps Station linking again with the road to the
west.
Continuing northward the journey breaks away to the east soon after Pine
View Station, and the site on Floods Creek where Sturt camped for
several days. The expedition travelled north-easterly from this point
and our route will link approximately with the direction through Pimpara
Lake and Pincally Stations.
The
journey continues northwards past Mt Arrowmith and into Milparinka and
Depot Glen.
From
Depot Glen Sturt's final foray into the interior was actually to the
north-west, to Fort Grey, then on to Sturt's Stony Desert. A number of
short expeditions were taken northward past what is now Tibooburra and
so this route continues in that direction before turning toward Cameron
Corner.
