Like so much of Australia, the
Corner Country of western New South Wales has suffered many long years
of drought. Late in 2009 severe dust-storms swept across the region
wiping from the landscape the last remaining dry vegetation, burying
roads and water troughs, fences and even animals.
It also swept away, for a
time, the spirit of people for whom the Corner Country is home.
The region was declared a "natural disaster" area.
Then, around Christmas, there was
a change in the season. Rain began to fall, not every where at
once, but gradually the wet areas began to merge, until at last, in
February, came the big rains.
The Corner Country, once totally
devoid of green, came alive almost overnight. Perennials, long
believed to be dead, grew little shoots, annual grasses germinated, and
the whole landscape changed. Birds and native animals have
returned, station owners have brought home their sheep and cattle and
there is a sense of optimism in the air.
Corner Country. Its a
great place to live and work...and visit. Come out
and see us soon.
